- Appearance: Choose the look that you want with your piano: upright or grand, color, sheen, new or old look
- Price: Choose the price range that you want to spend
- Tone and touch: When you find the piano, assess the tone and touch if you are able to test this, or ask the sales person to evaluate these if you have no experience.
- Health: Determine the piano is healthy, by reviewing it technically yourself with tips available in The Piano Book, and by getting professional advice. Do not assume age is the determining factor. Pianos 100+ years old can be exceedingly healthy at times, and pianos only 10 or 20 years old can have significant problems. There are no rules in this category.
- Belief: Buy the piano that you fully believe is the right and correct piano for you, the one that fits what you want, and that you feel good about after sufficient research.
